Dunkirk, Dynamo and Dunes

13 - Filming Christopher Nolan credit Nicolas Hequet

With the new Christopher Nolan movie hitting the silver screens this month, much focus will be on the French port of Dunkirk and Operation Dynamo, South Quay Travel & Leisure for one is offering a great short break for groups to the resort, taking in its impressive military history.

Accompanied by local expert guide, visit key WWII historical sites of Operation Dynamo. Both Dunkirk War Museum and Les Fort Des Dunes are both extremely interesting places relating to the defence of Dunkirk: you choose which to visit on your guided tour, however your group will have the opportunity to visit the other independently the following day. During the tour secrets of the filming will be disclosed along the way, and then it’s time to relax and enjoy lunch overlooking the evacuation beaches of the resort.

A little background information on the highlights may help you make an informed choice for your group; the Dunkirk War Museum lies in the Bastion 32 Bunker with a rich collection of weapons, uniforms, models, photos and maps, telling the story of the military operation and the evacuation of 338,000 allied soldiers. Whereas Les Fort Des Dunes is an impressive fort built with its buildings buried under the sand back in the 19th century; it too played a vital role in Operation Dynamo.

Apart from its rich military heritage, Dunkirk offers a great ‘foodie’ scene too, with local French-Flemish specialities to tingle your taste buds.  And if it’s the food that attracts you here, South Quay Travel & Leisure have an alternative ‘foodie tour’ of local specialties with visits to a craft beer brewery, a cheese factory and artisan ice-cream maker.

As a result of the Christopher Nolan’s ‘Dunkirk’ - interest has certainly sparked in this impressive story of Operation Dynamo; the resort itself lies only a 40-minute drive from Calais, meaning it’s really only a coach journey from the UK.
