BERGEN
TOUR C254 - TROLDHAUGEN AND FANTOFT STAVE CHURCH
| Duration: Approx. 3 hours | Price Range: TBC |
This tour will introduce you to two of the city’s main attractions: Troldhaugen, the home of the composer Edvard Grieg, and the new Fantoft Stave Church. From the quayside, we drive through the busy harbour area, passing the German Pier ‘Bryggen’ with its old wooden warehouses from the Hanseatic period, and then pass by Grieg Hall, the concert hall that bears the composer’s name, as it was originally his idea to host an annual music festival in Bergen. Leaving the city centre, we continue through the countryside to Troldhaugen, for twenty-two years the home of Edvard Grieg, Norway’s most famous composer. Situated by the peaceful Lake Nordås, it has often been called a ‘Little Eden for Music Lovers’. The house, which has remained unchanged, contains actual furnishings and memorabilia of the composer. Both he and his wife Nina are buried in the rock-wall below the house overlooking the fjord. Our next stop is at the Fantoft Stave Church. The old Stave Church, built in 1150 and moved to Fantoft in 1883, was burned down in 1992. The church has now been painstakingly rebuilt just as it was before the fire using timber from the Søgnefjord area north of Bergen, and Viking shipbuilding techniques are evident in the way the roof is built, and in the carvings of serpents and dragons as ornaments to frighten away evil spirits. On our return, we shall pass by some of the main highlights of the city of Bergen before arriving back at the ship. By coach/on foot, subject to a minimum of 35. Please note: There is a 10-minute uphill walk from the coach park to Grieg’s House, and this tour is not suitable for passengers with wheelchairs or those with walking difficulties. Flat, comfortable footwear is recommended. |
