BERGEN
TOUR C252 - OLD BERGEN AND AQUARIUM
| Duration: Approx. 3 hours | Price Range: TBC |
Bergen was founded in the year 1066, the same year as the Norman conquest of England. The city was the largest in the country and a centre for commerce and shipping. For several centuries, the Hanseatic merchants had one of their four major overseas trading offices in Bergen, the ‘German Office’ at Bryggen. The tour starts with a drive along the German Pier Bryggen, with its old wooden medieval warehouses dating from the Hanseatic period, and continues through the city centre passing the Greig Hall, where the famous Bergen Music Festival takes place each year in May. Our first stop is to visit the Old Bergen Museum. This open-air museum contains a collection of old charming houses, complete with streets, market place and alleys. Each home, shop and workshop is furnished in its original detail as it was some 150 years ago, and you will be able to look inside some of the houses and get an idea how the different classes lived. Along the main street there are various shops such as a bakery, jeweller and dentist, and this setting was used for the film, ‘Song of Norway’. We then proceed to the Nordnes Peninsula, to visit the Bergen Aquarium, with its underwater view of the seals’ playground, and outdoor pond for diving seabirds. The aquarium has one of the finest and most extensive collections of marine fauna in Europe, with nine large and forty-two smaller tanks. The main hall is a quiet, softly-lit circular building where the life and movement come from the sea around you. On our return, we shall make a stop at the famous Fish and Flower market close to the harbour, where you may choose to leave the tour for shopping, and then have a pleasant fifteen-minute walk back to the ship. By coach, subject to a minimum of 35. Please note: This tour involves some walking over cobble-stoned streets and uneven ground at the open-air museum, and is not suitable for passengers with wheelchairs or those with walking difficulties. Flat, comfortable footwear is recommended. |
