BERGEN
TOUR C251 - INTRODUCTION TO BERGEN
| Duration: Approx. 2 hours | Price Range: TBC |
Bergen was founded in the year 1066, the same year as the Norman conquest of England. The city was the largest in the country and a centre for commerce and shipping. For several centuries, the Hanseatic merchants had one of their four major overseas trading offices in Bergen, the ‘German Office’ at Bryggen. The panoramic tour, which will pass all the main sights in the city, starts with a drive along the German Pier ‘Bryggen’, with its old wooden medieval warehouses dating from the Hanseatic period, and continues past the imposing 700-year-old Haakon’s Hall. The Rosenkrantz Tower has an onion dome topped with a weather vane reconstructed from drawings made 400 years ago, and St. Mary’s Church, the oldest building in Bergen, dates back to the first half of the 12th century. Continuing through the city centre we pass the Grieg Hall, where the famous Bergen Music Festival takes place each year in May, as well as a number of other important buildings and monuments. On our return, we shall make a stop at the Fish and Flower market close to the harbour, where you may choose to leave the tour for shopping, and then have a pleasant fifteen- minute walk back to the ship. By coach, subject to a minimum of 35. Please note: There will be no stops or entrances during the panoramic drive except at the Fish and Flower market at the end of the tour. |
