FLAM
TOUR C223 - STALHEIM AND TVINDE WATERFALLS
| Duration: Approx. 3.25 hours | Price Range: TBC |
We start our drive in the idyllic village of Flåm at the head of the Aurlandsfjord, a branch of the mighty Sognefjord, Norway’s longest and deepest fjord. After a 20-minute drive through two lengthy tunnels, the longest being more than six miles from end to end, we arrive at Gudvangen, an important ferry junction on the other side of the mountains. We continue through the narrow and impressive Nærøydalen Valley with its many waterfalls, past the beautiful Lake Oppheim, then through woodland and green farmland to the spectacular Tvinde Waterfalls. The word Tvinde comes from an old Norwegian word meaning twin or double, and you will understand why, when you see the two waterfalls side by side plummeting down the mountainside. After a short stroll to enable you to get close to the waterfalls for photos, we return via the old mountain road known as the Stalheimskleivi, which has the distinction of being the steepest in Norway. Built nearly 150 years ago, it was a major feat of engineering with 13 hairpin bends within one mile. The stone fences we see in front of the farms down the valley are there to protect the buildings from the many snow and stone slides during the winter. Having arrived at the valley floor, we follow the crystal-clear River Nærøy, well-known for its salmon fishing, back to Gudvangen, where refreshments of coffee, tea and home-made cakes will be served at the Gudvangen Hotel. Afterwards there will be time to browse in the hotel’s gift shop which has a wide range of Norwegian souvenirs and handicrafts, before returning through the tunnels to Flåm. By coach, subject to a minimum of 35/maximum of 300. |
