FLAM
TOUR C221 - WATERFALLS AND WHITE CAVES

Duration: Approx. 3.5 hours Price Range: TBC

We leave the peaceful port of Flåm, situated in the innermost part of the 200-kilometre-long Sognefjord, Norway’s longest and most majestic fjord. After a 20-minute drive through two tunnels, the longest being more than six miles long, we arrive at Gudvangen on the other side of the mountains at the head of the stunning Nærøyfjord. We continue along the road leading to Voss and eventually Bergen, passing the beautiful Lake Oppheim, then through woodland and green farmland to the spectacular Tvinde Waterfalls that cascade down the mountainside. The word Tvinde comes from an old Norwegian word meaning twin or double, and you will understand why, when you see the two waterfalls side by side thundering down the mountain. After enjoying some free time to take photos or buy postcards, our next stop is the recently discovered ‘White Caves’, which you will visit. For many years there has been a rather special industry in this valley where anorthosite, a very rare and extraordinary white mineral, has been excavated. As well as here in the valley, there is only one other large source of anorthosite known to mankind, and that is on the moon! The white stone has been used to cover airstrips and roads, but today it is increasingly used for cleaning toxic industrial material, due to its remarkable neutralizing properties. On arrival you will be given protective headgear and warm jackets to wear, as the temperature inside the caves is considerably lower, as you will soon notice. You enter the mountain through a small entrance previously used by miners, and start your walking tour along paths covered with matting deep into the mountain. During your magical 35-minute journey on foot, you will experience darkness and light, silence and the soothing sounds of slowly running water. Playing softly in the background will be tranquil music of Norway’s finest composer, Edvard Greig, and you will find yourself in total harmony with the natural surroundings. Talking is discouraged as the echo is very strong and even whispering would destroy the effect of the different sounds you are going to hear during the tour. At the end of the walk, you may relax and reflect on your visit to these intriguing caves whilst a welcome cup of coffee or tea and cake is served. On your return to the quayside, there will be a short time to look for souvenirs in the excellent gift shop, before taking the tender back to the ship.
By coach/on foot, subject to a minimum of 35/maximum of 160. Please note: It can sometimes be cold and damp inside the caves, so warm clothing and flat, comfortable footwear is recommended. We regret there are only fairly basic toilet facilities outside the caves.
