EIDFJORD
TOUR C211 - WATERFALLS AND WILDLIFE CENTRE
| Duration: Approx. 3.5 hours | Price Range: TBC |
The village of Eidfjord is a small community with around only 1,000 inhabitants, but it is one of Norway’s richest communities owing to the vast production of hydro-electric power. Our tour starts with a drive through the village and ascends the steep Måbødalen Valley. The road leads to the enormous Hardanger plateau and Norway’s largest National Park, which is one of the few places where you can still see wild reindeer herds. We shall take a closer look at one of Norway’s most famous waterfalls, the Vøringsfossen, which has a free fall of 183 metres to the wild Måbødal Valley below. After our visit inside the mountain, we continue along the valley and through the tunnel which takes us high up into the mountainside. Leaving the tunnel, we have a breathtaking view of the Sognefjord, the surrounding mountain ranges and the Jostedalen Glacier. The Hardanger Nature and Wildlife Centre which opened in 1995 is our next stop. The centre has an interesting exhibition emphasising the wildlife in the area, and in the cinema we shall see an excellent film presentation of the waterfalls and dams. Before returning to Eidfjord, we drive up to see the Sysen Dam, a rock-filled dam measuring 1,157 metres in length and 81 metres in height and the main reservoir for the Sima Power Station. Much effort and expense has gone into trying to reduce the damage to nature to a minimum, as well as providing facilities for hatching and breeding young fish to restock the streams. Finally at the Fossli viewpoint we stop to admire the impressive Vøringsfossen waterfall thundering down some 183 metres to the canyon below, and afterwards there will be time to enjoy refreshments of coffee or tea. By coach/on foot, subject to a minimum of 35/maximum of 160. |
