SOUTH QUAY CRUISES

Funchal sails from At Sea
Cruise 7th March - 13th April

Funchal’s northbound springtime voyage from Australia to the British Isles provides a unique opportunity to return home from your holiday Down Under (perhaps from visiting friends or relatives or from exploring the vast Australian continent) by taking advantage of a leisurely and relaxing voyage as Funchal heads towards the Northern Hemisphere after her Australian summer season of cruises from her home port of Fremantle. Lazy days at sea are the order of the day interrupted by an excellent choice of contrasting port of call along the way as we cruise via Singapore and Phuket in South-East Asia, Colombo in Sri Lanka and on to Safaga and Port Said to visit a rich array of Egyptian splendours. After traversing the impressive Suez Canal we head across the Mediterranean Sea with visits to Messina and Naples in Italy, the Portuguese capital of Lisbon and finally Le Havre in Normandy before arriving back in Harwich, suitably refreshed and ready for the British summer.

AT SEA
Day 15 Days 15-22
Sit back and relax and enjoy the Easter holiday weekend (Fri 21 – Mon 24 Mar) at sea and a leisurely one week voyage across the Arabian Sea and into the Red Sea en-route to North Africa and the Egyptian port of Safaga.

SAFAGA (for Luxor, Egypt)
Day 23 Arr 0700hrs Dep 0200hrs, stay 19hrs.
Safaga is a port town at the top of the Red Sea, but, more importantly, one which affords us the chance to offer a wonderful excursion choice to Luxor and Thebes. Standing on the banks of the great River Nile, there is simply nowhere like Luxor for discovering the full splendours of Ancient Egypt. And there is ample time here to explore the vast Temple of Karnak, built by successive Pharaohs over a mind-boggling 2,000 years, or to cross the Nile to the Valley of the Kings, where tombs like that of Tutankhamun have been discovered with great ceremony.

SUEZ CANAL (Transit)
Day 25 Transit through the canal
More than 50 ships transit the Suez Canal every day, and Funchal will be among them today. Inaugurated in 1869, the Canal took more than 10 years to build and involved the labour of some 20,000 men, many of them forced into working in near slave-labour conditions. Now one of the world’s most important waterways, it is a staggering 101 miles long and can take ships up to 50 feet in draft.

PORT SAID (for Cairo, Egypt)
Day 25 Funchal arrives at 0200hrs
Port Said is the main port at the start of the journey into the Mediterranean and also a convenient point from which to join the optional – but highly recommended excursions to the city of Cairo and the wondrous sights of the Sphinx and Pyramids of Giza. You should certainly visit the Egyptian Museum, for the greatest collection of antiquities anywhere in the world, including the treasures of Tutankhamun.

PORT SAID (for Cairo, Egypt)

NAPLES (Italy)
Day 30 Arr 0900hrs Dep 1400hrs, stay 5hrs.
The beautiful Bay of Naples is one of the most majestic harbour settings in the Med, dominated by the volcanic backdrop of Mt Vesuvius and the breathtaking Amalfi coastline.
