Safaga is a port town at the top of the Red Sea, but, more importantly, one
which affords us the chance to offer a wonderful excursion choice to Luxor
and Thebes. Standing on the banks of the great River Nile, there is simply
nowhere like Luxor for discovering the full splendours of Ancient Egypt. And
there is ample time here to explore the vast Temple of Karnak, built by successive
Pharaohs over a mind-boggling 2,000 years, or to cross the Nile to the Valley
of the Kings, where tombs like that of Tutankhamun have been discovered with
great ceremony. SUEZ CANAL (Transit)
Day 25 Transit through
the canal
More than 50 ships transit the Suez Canal every day, and Funchal will be among
them today. Inaugurated in 1869, the Canal took more than 10 years to build
and involved the labour of some 20,000 men, many of them forced into working
in near slave-labour conditions. Now one of the world’s most important waterways,
it is a staggering 101 miles long and can take ships up to 50 feet in draft. PORT SAID (for Cairo, Egypt)
Day 25 Funchal arrives at 0200hrs
Port Said is the main port at the start of the journey into the Mediterranean
and also a convenient point from which to join the optional – but highly recommended
excursions to the city of Cairo and the wondrous sights of the Sphinx and Pyramids
of Giza. You should certainly visit the Egyptian Museum, for the greatest collection
of antiquities anywhere in the world, including the treasures of Tutankhamun. PORT SAID (for Cairo, Egypt)
