KIEL CANAL (Germany)
Day 3 Transit of the Kiel Canal
Cruising the North Sea en route to Brunsbuttel. Arrive 0300hrs for the transit of the Kiel Canal. Built in 1895, this 61 mile long waterway stretches across Northern Germany to link the Baltic with the North Sea. Its construction saves seafarers the lengthy journey around the Skagerrak, which was considered a hazardous route for the sailing ships of the 19th century. The Kiel Canal handles around 70,000 vessels a year, more than the Panama or the Suez canals. Athena is scheduled to complete the transit and depart from Holtenau at 1100hrs.

KIEL (Germany)
Day 3 Arr 1300hrs Dep 1800hrs, stay 5hrs.
Kiel is known as the Northern Light of the Baltic and is capital of the Schleswig-Holsten, the most northerly state of Germany. ST PETERSBURG (Russia)

Russia’s glorious second city and even our long stay here is barely sufficient to view even a proportion of the wonderful sights that this real Baltic treasure has to offer. The Hermitage, and its outstanding art collection, the Peter & Paul Fortress, St Isaac’s Cathedral, the battleship Aurora, whose guns signalled the start of the 1917 revolution, all vie for your attention in this city on the banks of the Neva River. A full programme of tours, including evening options to the ballet or a folklore show, is operated to help you make the most of your precious time here.
