SOUTH QUAY CRUISES

m/s Marco Polo sails from London Tilbury
Cruise 18th July - 30th July

This cruise of contrasts between the ‘old world’ of the Scandinavian kingdoms and the ‘new world’ of the emergent former communist states of Russia, East Germany and Estonia offers the opportunity for you to discover the modern day pleasures of the countries bordering the Baltic Sea. Visits to the lovely capitals of Stockholm, Copenhagen and Helsinki are beautifully complemented by cheerful Warnemünde, picturesque Tallinn and of course, incomparable St Petersburg.

From Tilbury, Marco Polo heads through the Kiel Canal bound for Warnemünde, now an international resort in Northern Germany, where the long call here allows a full day excursion opportunity to Berlin. Medieval Tallinn, a delight with an old town boasting such quaint names as Long Leg Street or Tall Hermann, is the precursor to a two day stay in St Petersburg, home to many of the artistic and architectural treasures of Russia’s imperial past. The fabulous Hermitage, Catherine Palace, St Isaac’s Cathedral and Peterhof all demand attention but even the long stay here is barely sufficient to view even a proportion of all the sights. A carefully planned, but intensive, excursion programme that also covers evening activities ensures that you might see as much as possible. Next is Helsinki, where the spectacular onion-domed Uspensky Cathedral dominates the harbour. Stockholm, built across waterways and a maze of islands and boasting elegant shops and the enchanting medieval Gamla Stan; and Copenhagen, rich in culture and tradition with the Strøget and the famous ‘Den Lille Havfrue’ – The Little Mermaid – as prime attractions, complete your cruise of contrasts. An early morning transit of the Kiel Canal heralds a final day at sea before Tilbury.

KIEL CANAL (Germany)
Day 2 Transit through the Kiel Canal
Built in 1895, this 61 mile long waterway stretches across Northern Germany to link the Baltic with the North Sea. Its construction saves seafarers the lengthy journey around the Skagerrak, which was considered a hazardous route for the sailing ships of the 19th century. The Kiel Canal handles around 70,000 vessels a year, more than the Panama or the Suez canals. Arielle is scheduled to complete the transit and depart from Holtenau at 0300hrs.

WARNEMUNDE (for Berlin, Germany)
Day 3 Arr 0900hrs Dep 2200hrs, stay 13hrs.
An international resort at the mouth of the Warnow River, Warenmunde is your gateway to the old Hanseatic city of Rostock, the lovely countryside and coastal resorts of Northern Germany and to Berlin, which can be visited on an exciting full day optional tour. The Brandenburg Gate, fashionable Unter den Linden and the Checkpoint Charlie Museum will provide some powerful memories.

AT SEA
Day 4 Cruising at sea

TALLINN (Estonia)
Day 5 Arr 1230hrs Dep 1730hrs, stay 5hrs.
A very attractive Baltic capital city, that is renowned for its friendliness and the welcome it provides for visitors. Estonia is now a modern forward thinking country but with a great pride in its history. Tallinn has a well-preserved medieval quarter, impressive fortified city walls and it is a delight to visit the quaintly named Long Leg Street or Tall Hermann, a 14th century watchtower.

ST PETERSBURG (Russia)
Day 6 Overnight stay in St. Petersburg
Russia’s glorious second city and even our long stay here is barely sufficient to view even a proportion of the wonderful sights that this real Baltic Treasure has to offer. The Hermitage, and its outstanding art collection, the Peter & Paul Fortress, St Isaac’s Cathedral, the battleship Aurora, whose guns signalled the start of the 1917 revolution, all vie for your attention in this city on the banks of the Neva River. A full programme of tours, including evening options to the ballet or a folklore show, is operated here to help you make the most of your precious time here.

ST PETERSBURG (Russia)
Day 7 Enjoy another full day in St. Petersburg

HELSINKI (Finland)
Day 8 Arr 0800hrs Dep 1400hrs, stay 6hrs.
The Finnish capital typifies the country’s reputation for the best in modern design and architecture. Splendid buildings old and new are shown to their best effect in an uncrowded setting of parks and woodlands. You can’t miss the spectacular onion-domed Uspensky Cathedral which dominates the harbour.

STOCKHOLM (Sweden)
Day 9 Arr 0830hrs Dep 1630hrs, stay 8hrs.
The 700-year old capital of Sweden is one of the most beautiful cities in the world and is spread over 14 islands, connected by some 50 bridges. Wander around the enchanting medieval Gamla Stan, the original old town; visit the fascinating Wasa Museum, housing the world’s oldest identified ship or just enjoy the fine restaurants and elegant shops of the Strandvagen.
